bushel. 60 bushels per acre x 240 acres- 14,400 bushels total. 14,400 x $5.67 (cost per bushel) =

$81,648 $81,648 is how much he earns, but you have to subtract $45,357.60 because that’s how

23. If Randy sells 8 times as many vacuum cleaners as Janice, and Janice sells 690 vacuum cleaners per year, on

average, how many does Randy sell each month?

 If Randy sels 8 times as many vacuum cleaners as Janice, and Janice sells 690 vacuum cleaners per year, then

randy sells 8*690=5,520 vacuum cleaners per year. So: 5,520/12 months = 460 vacuum cleaners per month

460 vacuums/month

24. A marathon runner is training for his next race. On his daily run he completes 21.6 mile and burns 2,274

25. A baker can bake 4 cakes with 10 cups of sugar. If he has a 30 cup bag that is 1/2 full, how many cakes can

he bake? If the 30c bag of sugar is 1/2 full, there are 15c left. If the baker can bake 4 cakes with 10 c, he can

bake 2 with 5. therefore he can bake 2*3 = 6 cakes

26. Two buildings in downtown Chicago stand across the river from each other. The first building's height is

1,700 feet and it casts a shadow that is 525 feet long. If the second building's height is 1,450 feet, how long will

its shadow be at the same time of day (round to the nearest foot)?

If the height of the first building is 1,700ft while its shadow is 525ft, and the second building's height is 1,450ft

tall, it sets up this proportion: 1,700/525=1,450/x. By cross multiplying and solving for x we find:

1,700x=761,250; x=448ft long

26. If 6 textbooks cost $354 , how much do 13 textbooks cost? if 6 textbooks cost $354, then 1 textbook costs:

27. Jessie can answer multiplication problems at a rate of 6 problems every 20 seconds. If she has a 10 minute

test with 175 questions on it, will she finish in time? If Jessie can answer 6 questions in 20 seconds, and there

are 60 seconds in a minute, she can answer 36=18 questions each minute. Since the test is 10 minutes long, she

can answer 1018=180 questions. therefore, YES, she will finish the 175 question test and could even complete

5 more.

28. A bookstore has 50% more fantasy books than biographies. What is the ratio of fantasy books to

biographies? If there are 50% more fantasy books than biographies, then we can create false numbers and say

that if there are 100 biographies, there will be 150 fantasy books. The ratio of fantasy books to biographies,

then, is 150: 100. dividing by 50, the ratio simplifies to 3:2

MATH WORD PROBLEMS

1. 1. Mia walks away from her desk to refill her 1-liter water bottle. On the way back to her desk Mia

bumps into Mike and spills water on him. She still has 771 mL left. How many milliliters of water

did Mia lose?

1L = 1000 mL.

1000mL - 771mL = 229 mL of water is lost.

2. Elizabeth has 1 liter of soda. She shares it with three of her friends. She gives 300 mL to William, 200

mL to Paul, and 250 mL with Tasha. How many milliliters of soda do Elizabeth have left for herself?

1L = 1000 mL.

300 mL + 200 mL + 250mL = 750 mL.

1000 mL - 750 mL = 250 mL of soda is left for herself

3. Leo has lunch in the cafeteria every day with his 2 best friends. For lunch they each get a 300 mL

carton of milk. Leo’s friend Lexi does not like milk, so she gives him her carton of milk. Jade also

gives him half of her carton because she is full. How many milliliters of milk does Leo have?

Each has 300 mL of milk. Lexi does not drink milk, so she gave Leo her milk (300 + 300 = 600

mL). Jade gave Leo half of her carton (300/0.5 = 150 mL). So now Leo has (600 +150) 750 mL

of milk.

4. Diara is working on her science fair project. She is building a windmill waterfall. Diara needs a total

of 2.5 L of water to complete her project. She already has four 250 mL containers and one 500 mL

container. How many more milliliters does Diara need to complete her project?

2.5 L x 1000mL/1L = 2500mL

(4 x 250 mL containers = 1000 mL) + (1 x 500 mL container = 500 mL) = 1500 mL

2500 mL - 1500 mL = 1,000 mL more to complete her project

5. Penny, Louise, and Christina have planned to sneak up and pour water on their friend Lorraine. They

have six containers total. Three containers have 250 mL of water, two have 700 mL of water, and one

has 550 mL of water. How many liters of water do they have?

1L = 1000 mL

Poured water total = 6 containers

(750 mL) + (700 mL) + (550 mL) = 2070 mL

2070 mL x (1L/1000mL) = 2.07 L

6. Johnny, Mark, and Anthony fill up some water balloons. Each water balloon holds 300 mL of water.

They throw four balloons at their friend Theodore and three at Julie. Lillian sees what they are doing

and pops the remaining three balloons, so they cannot throw any at her. How many liters of water

were in the balloons?

Each water balloon = 300 mL water

Theodore = 4 balloons = 4 x 300 = 1200 mL

Julie = 3 balloons = 3 x 300 = 900 mL

Lillian = pops 3 balloons = 3 x 300 = 900 mL

1200 + 900 + 900 = 3000 mL

3000 mL x (1L/1000 mL) = 3 L

7. Lindsay and Maize go for a hike. During the hike Lindsay misguides them and they end up lost. They

each have 1 liter of water. Maize drinks all but 467 mL of his water. How many milliliters of water

does Maize have left?

1 L = 1000 mL

Each have 1 liter of water

Maize drinks 467 mL of water

1000 mL - 467 mL = 533 mL

8. Benjamin has 2 liters of water. He only drinks 4 mouthfuls of water every hour. If a mouthful is

50 mL, how many hours will his water last?

1 L = 1000 mL

Benjamin = 2 liters of water and drank 4 mouthful of water/hr

2 L = 2000 mL

Mouthful = 50 mL

4 x 50 = 200 mL/hr

2000/200 = 10 hrs

9. Phil, Raymond, and Hannah want to make ice cream. They will need to buy 1 liter of cream. They

only sell cream in 200 mL containers at the store. How many containers will they need?

1 L = 1000 mL

1 container = 200 mL

1000/200 = 5 containers of ice cream

10. 10. Ethan and Charlotte go to the store to buy water guns. Ethan’s water gun holds 1.25 liters of water.

Charlotte’s water gun holds 1.75 liters of water. How many milliliters of water will they need to fill up

both guns?

1 L = 1000 mL

Ethan’s water gun = 1.25 L of water

Charlotte’s = 1.75 L

1.25 + 1.75 = 3 L

3 L x (1000 mL/1L) = 3,000 mL

19. A farmer has 240 acres under cultivation at the cost of $188.99 per acre. If he averages a

yield of 60 bushels per acre, what profit is expected if the price per bushel is $5.67?

36,290.40

First figure out total cost cultivation. $189.99 per acre x 240 acres = $45,357.60

So basically it costs the farmer $45,357.60 to maintain 240 acres. Next, figure out how much he earns

per bushel. 60 bushels per acre x 240 acres- 14,400 bushel total. 14,400 x $5.67 (cost per bushel) =

$81,648

$81,648 is how much he earns, but you have to subtract $45,357.60 because that’s how much he is

losing (spending) to maintain his farm

$81,648- $45,357.60 = $36,290.40
